What the Westerly Lions Club has done recently
2008-2009
Monetary Help
· Eye exam & glasses for any Westerly School Child in need
· $2,180 in college scholarships, annually, for Westerly High School graduates
· $5,000 to Children with Cancer @ RI Hospital
· Camperships for children attending Camp Mauchatea, Exeter, RI, a summer camp for the blind
· Various monetary help for needy visually impaired residents that include: chair lifts for vans, braille books, Seeing Eye dogs, devices to help handicapped individuals and more…
· $12,000 to Sylvia Bogusz (18 yrs. old), who was outside her disabled vehicle when struck by a drunk driver. During her rehabilitation she had many financial needs. A joint effort between Westerly Lions and Newport Fed raised funds at a spaghetti in her honor.
· Paid for an ear procedure for a Westerly boy who could not hear well @ school
People Power Projects
· A major volunteer effort to help build 2 duplex homes for Habitat for Humanity in Westerly’s North End.
· Cooking the breakfast for the Westerly Band Booster annual fund raiser @ the Westerly Yacht Club.
· Organizing and directing the floats, participants and entrants for the Westerly Columbus Day Parade.
· Preparing and serving a dinner to 190 people at our Annual Picnic for the Blind. It includes blind people throughout the state of RI.
· Prepared the grounds and constructed a handicap ramp for a local resident who is handicapped at his home (65 man hours).
· Constructed a greenhouse at The Frank Olean Center.
